What it will do that the web scanner does not
The web scanner is built for auditing: give it a URL, get a prioritised report across multiple pages. That is the right shape for assessing a site, and the wrong shape for the moment you are actually building one.
The extension is for that second moment. It tests the page currently on your screen — including pages a URL-based scanner cannot reach, such as anything behind a login, a form in a half-completed state, a modal that is open right now, or a component on your local development server. Those are exactly the states where accessibility problems concentrate, and exactly the ones that get missed when testing only ever runs against public URLs.
Why there is a waitlist rather than a download
Browser extensions ask for meaningful permissions over the pages you visit, and a scanner that runs against logged-in pages deserves more scrutiny than most. We would rather ship it slowly and narrowly than get that wrong. The waitlist is how you hear when it is genuinely ready, and it is not a mailing list for anything else.
In the meantime the web scanner covers everything publicly reachable, and the contrast checker works on any colour pair without installing anything at all.
